Scrubbers are used in many industrial processes to remove potentially harmful and polluting gas emissions before they enter the atmosphere. In this case study, we discussed about our process, solution and detailed examination of the development of a Scrubber Monitoring System.

Requirements

  • To monitor all five (5) scrubber line parameters.
  • Each scrubber line has parameters which include as listed below:
    1. Three (3) static pressure parameters
    2. Two (2) flow rate parameters
    3. Two (2) temperature parameters
    4. One (1) pH parameter
    5. Totalizer
  • These parameters are important as Department of Environment Malaysia (DOE) required the air released to be scrubbed properly.

Solution

  • To fulfil the requirement, all the parameters required are displayed on each scrubber line for ease of monitoring. 
  • The system provides a summarize view of all the parameters in one page. These data can be logged to USB Drive for auditing purposes.
  • Each parameter has its own monthly chart whereby the data is logged daily and shown on the chart of 31 days.The system settings are locked. Authorization will be needed to change settings for safety purposes and to avoid wrong data being collected.
  • The system can only be monitored locally. Remote monitoring is not available.
  • Alarm with be notified by the siren and revolving light.

Conclusion

  • Overall, most of the system parameters can be monitored closely. However, the system is lack of remote monitoring function.
  • Additional improvements can be added to enhance its functionality.
    1. SMS Alarm Function
      • Any related alarm can be assessed immediately by the person in-charge.
      • Can be programmed to a number of recipients according to the client’s needs.
    2. Hourly Data Update SMS
      • Every parameter measurement can be updated hourly by SMS.
      • Can be programmed to a number of recipients according to the client’s needs.
    3. REMOX
      • To view remotely through HMI’s web-server. With access to the internet or a public IP address, this can be programmed and provided along with REMOX monitoring system
      • Function can be limited/unlimited.
      • E-mail notification can be included as well.
