Small line and batch process operations are common in many industries, including water/wastewater treatment, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and chemical processing. The process systems for these industries requires precision and are relatively sophisticated, therefore the right flow meter plays a critical role in providing feedback for proper monitoring and control.
Semiconductor: In semiconductor industry, flow measurement is important in different wet processes where abrasive, adherent, corrosive, and ultra-pure liquids are used in wafer cleaning operation. For example, if a cleaning solution is under- or overdosed during the cleaning process, the wafers will need to be discarded due to inconsistency.
Pharmaceutical: Maximum hygiene and precision are the requirements for pharmaceutical manufacturers to produce safe medicines. The smallest deviations can affect the effectiveness of the substances or even endanger human life. In a Clean in Place (CIP) application, for example, the flow meter measures the cleaning and rinsing liquids flowing in and out and controls the validated cleaning process.
Food and Beverages: In the production of fruit juices and related food products (such as nectars, beverage cocktails, juice bars, etc.), flow meters are used for dosing applications such as adding ingredients – like flavourings, colorants, and aromas. Flow meters can accurately measure and control small quantities of ingredients with high precision and high repeatability, to ensure consistency in the flavour, clarity, and shelf-life.
Chemical Processing: In a chemical processing plant, flow proportional control is usually used for controlling chemicals applied at a fixed dose. Chemical must be dosed into the system at the proper rate to achieve the correct proportions. Unstable chemical dosage may cause unnecessary cost of chemicals or damage on the operation process.
Water / Wastewater Treatment: In dosing systems for water and wastewater treatment, chemicals or additives are injected and mixed directly in the process flow. Dosing systems are usually used to inject biocides, coagulants, flocculants, anti-foaming agents, odorants, and neutralizing agents in the purification process. Accuracy in the treatment process will help to reduce chemical wastage and prevent undesirable chemical reactions when the wastewater mixes with other effluent.
