Monitoring the water level at an open reservoir poses several challenges compared with measuring level inside a closed tank. In the outdoor, water surfaces can experience changes due to rainfall, wind, waves, evaporation, etc. It may also be exposed to sunlight, humidity, rain and outdoor environmental conditions. Radar level measurement is highly recommended because of its non-contact, continuous level monitoring.
Features
Non-Contact Measurement: Reservoirs contains raw water or untreated water, non-contact measurement can reduce issues associated with fouling, corrosion, sediment accumulation, biological growth and physical damage. This provides a practical solution in maintenance and upkeeping of the instrument.
Continuous Real-Time Water Level Monitoring: Radar level transmitter can continuously monitor the water level, instead of relying on manual or periodic measurement. When integrated with a PLC, SCADA and HMI, the measured level can be displayed alongside other process parameters.
Easy Access for Installation and Maintenance: Open reservoirs may have considerable distances between the sensor installation point and the water surface. The radar level sensor can be mounted on a support structure such as holder or frame extending over the reservoir, allowing the instrument to measure the water surface from above.
A robust support structure can also make the instrument easier to access for inspection, maintenance and calibration checks. The mounting location should also be selected to minimise disturbances from strong turbulence, heavy splashing or other surface conditions that could affect measurement stability.
Key Considerations Using a Radar Level Transmitter
Water Surface Conditions
Wind and flow can create waves or surface movement. The sensor should be installed at a suitable location where the measured surface is representative of the actual reservoir level.
Measurement Range
The distance between the sensor and the minimum and maximum expected water levels should be considered when selecting the appropriate radar sensor.
Installation Height
The sensor must have sufficient measurement range to cover the operating level of the reservoir while maintaining an appropriate installation position.
Obstructions
The radar beam should have a clear measurement path. Structural elements within the beam can potentially create unwanted reflections.
Environmental Exposure
Outdoor installations should consider rain, humidity, temperature changes, sunlight and other environmental conditions. Appropriate enclosure and material selection are important for long-term reliability.
